During a welcome reception, the new High Commissioner of Australia, Kate Chamley, highlighted the importance of the relationship between Mauritius and Australia.

Welcomed by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, Ms. Chamley emphasized that both countries were natural partners due to their location in the Indian Ocean and their multicultural societies.

“Mauritius and Australia share similar values in terms of supporting political, economic, and religious freedoms, as well as democracy, the rule of law, racial and gender equality, and mutual respect,” she stated.

Referring to diplomatic relations dating back to 1970 and the historical ties between the two peoples since the 1800s, Kate Chamley underscored a warm and longstanding relationship based on mutual collaboration.

She highlighted several potential areas of collaboration, including trade, education, climate change, gender equality, youth leadership, blue economy, and maritime security.

Kate Chamley concluded by expressing Australia’s commitment to working with Mauritius to address common challenges through joint solutions.
