Primate Rights: 4 Tilapat President Sues AML & ATOL Over Cruelty

Linley Moothien, President of the NGO 4 Tilapat, has taken decisive action towards protecting the rights of primates.

Accompanied by his lawyer, Me Karishma Parboteeah-Roopun, and his barrister, Me Yash Appadoo, the President of the NGO has served a legal notice to Airports of Mauritius Ltd (AML) and Airport Terminal Operation Ltd (ATOL).

This legal action comes following allegations of blatant violations of the Animal Welfare Act of 2013 in the process of transporting macaques from farms to their loading onto cargo planes.

“Instances of blatant violations of the Animal Welfare Act of 2013 are commonplace from the moment the macaques are ‘boxed’ from the farms, transported in armored trucks to the airport, stored on the tarmac to being loaded into the cargo plane, enduring 48 hours of suffering,” explains Linley Moothien.

He asserts that the packaging, transportation, and loading into the cargo planes phase is particularly cruel, involving atrocities, torture, abuse, and suffering. He aims to immediately put an end to these inhumane practices.

The legal notice aims to “halt any future shipment of long-tailed primates under such conditions,” and has been addressed not only to AML and ATOL but also to the Police Commissioner “to ensure urgent action is taken.”

Linley Moothien also plans to file a formal complaint with the Airport Police in this regard.
