Thai national Samita Tumkhao (pictured), 29, arrived on Air Vistara flight UK241 from India yesterday morning at 7 am. During the Green Channel inspection, she was apprehended with 2.3 kilograms of heroin in her suitcase, valued at Rs 36 million.

She arrived in Mauritius on a tourist visa and was supposed to stay in an apartment in Péreybère.

Following a quick substance test to confirm the presence of drugs, the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit of the Mauritius Revenue Authority seized the narcotics, and the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) at the airport planned a controlled delivery.

A dummy package was handed to her, and a group of plainclothes ADSU officers followed her to the apartment. She was found in possession of a mobile phone to communicate with her local contact for the retrieval of the package.

Police officers waited at the drug courier’s apartment for a long time, but no one showed up.

The drugs will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis, and her phone will be forwarded to the police’s IT Unit to trace her contact.

Police are already questioning her employment status and will investigate her financial means for the trip to Mauritius. She will also be searched to ascertain the amount of pocket money she had for her holiday on the island.
