Mauritian Students Flock Abroad: Over 19,000 Opt for Studies Overseas

The number of Mauritian students opting to study abroad is increasing despite the government’s introduction of a free higher education program in 2019.

In 2022, there was a significant rise in students choosing distance learning, with 19,752 candidates opting for studies abroad, a 17.3% increase from the previous year.

The Higher Education Commission report reveals that despite the Free Higher Education Scheme, 48% of young Mauritians have chosen not to enroll in public institutions.

This trend has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the government’s program. The Director of the University of Technology in Mauritius notes that competition between public and private institutions offers students a variety of options in higher education.

This shift towards international education opportunities is reflected in the increasing number of students opting to study abroad, indicating a desire for a different learning experience. Public universities like UTM and the University of Mauritius offer globally recognized academic programs, standing out amidst the rise of private institutions in Mauritius.

The Labour Party’s education spokesperson acknowledges the appeal of sending children abroad for a diverse cultural experience but emphasizes the quality of programs in public universities. The success of the government’s free university program is being assessed based on students’ decision to pursue studies overseas.
