Hong Kong companies have expressed an interest in investing in Mauritius’ financial sector. The Mauritian jurisdiction was presented as an alternative option to Singapore at a recent promotion mission in Hong Kong.

The Economic Development Board (EDB) of Mauritius conducted the mission alongside private Mauritian sector companies. The United States, China, and Hong Kong are among the markets the sector hopes to expand into.

A handful of Hong Kong mining investment companies have expressed interest in creating a structure in Mauritius. The structure will facilitate investment on the continent of Africa. Manufacturing firms are also considering setting up similar structures to coordinate investment in Africa.

The mission promoted Mauritius as a complementary jurisdiction for outsourcing from Hong Kong and China. The forum was focused on the Asian Financial Forum, which saw over 3,000 delegates from more than 40 countries attend.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has rated Mauritius’ compliance with all 40 of its recommendations highly. The Mauritian delegation highlighted the cost-effectiveness of doing business in the country compared to Singapore.

The EDB has announced further promotion campaigns through webinars, conferences, and business forums in the US, China, Hong Kong, and other markets. The theme of the promotion campaign is “Mauritius, your partner of choice for Africa”.

Minister of Financial Services Mahen Seeruttun also promoted new investment opportunities in fintech, capital markets, and the ESG framework. The EDB held a business forum for over 80 professionals in the financial service sector.
