Kenyan Lions Face Threat as Ants from Mauritius Cause Chaos

Kenyan lions are facing a serious threat from invading big-headed ants from Mauritius, according to a study from the University of Wyoming.

The research shows that these ants are causing disruption to the ecosystem and changing the hunting behaviour of lions in Laikipia County.

The Mauritian ants, known for their large heads, are able to outcompete other species.

Unlike the local acacia ants, the Mauritian ones do not have a beneficial relationship with the whistling thorn trees that dominate the landscape in East Africa.

The destruction of native ants by the Mauritian invaders puts the trees at risk, leaving the land bare and vulnerable to damage from elephants.

This in turn affects the lions’ ability to hunt zebras, leading to a decline in zebra kills and an increase in buffalo hunting.

The long-term consequences of this disruption remain unknown, but the researchers suggest it could have an impact on the dynamics of lion prides.
