Approximately 500kg of cannabis has been seized in a successful operation carried out by the Central Barracks Intelligence Unit.

Acting on information received, officers intercepted a speedboat suspected to be smuggling hard drugs or cannabis off the coast of Pointe-aux-Canonniers on Friday, January 5.

During the operation, four Mauritians and six Malagasy individuals were arrested in collaboration with the Customs Anti-Narcotics unit, the National Coast Guard, and the Mauritian police intervention group.

The boat was escorted to Port Louis harbor by the CGS Barracuda on Monday, January 8.

Commissioner of Police, Anil Kumar Dip, described it as a historic day, expressing satisfaction with the operation that took place under challenging conditions.

He revealed that two of the apprehended Mauritians were on parole for drug offenses and that the crew members of a second suspicious boat engaged in resistance, resulting in injuries to three commandos.

Commissioner Dip warns of increased vigilance during the festive period and suspects that the seized packages contain cannabis or hard drugs, with ongoing analyses, including that of oil found in jerrycans.

He confirms that local importers are now under scrutiny by the police.
