Cadress Runghen, a social worker in Mauritius, has raised alarm about the chaotic drug situation in the country.

Speaking on a TV show, Runghen emphasised the dehumanising nature of drugs and the negative impact they have on families and communities. He highlighted the need for more than empty slogans and called for action through prevention campaigns and better rehabilitation efforts.

Runghen also noted the challenges faced in combating drug trafficking, including the existence of hidden protections.

Other participants in the show stressed the importance of new approaches and resources for rehabilitation programs.

Additionally, lawyer Nilkhant Dulloo argued for greater Mauritian involvement in leading the National Coast Guard to address the drug trafficking issue in the Indian Ocean.

He also criticised the National Drug Master Plan 2019-2023 for its failure due to a lack of political will.
