Mauritius struggles to combat drug addiction among young people
The drug issue in Mauritius remains a significant challenge. Despite efforts from various partners, the drug trade continues to grow, and more people seek addiction treatments.
The rise in synthetic drug use among young people is particularly concerning, and demand for rehabilitation programs remains high.
However, young addicts’ impatience often leads them to abandon long-term programs designed to help them overcome addiction.
The UNODC’s 2023 World Drug Report highlights the vulnerability of young people to drug abuse, stating that only one in five people with drug-related disorders received treatment in 2021.
Without updated support programs and more effective strategies, it may be challenging to address the drug problem effectively in Mauritius.
