Employees at the Cargo Handling Corporation Ltd (CHCL) in Mauritius have taken action in response to discontent surrounding the current promotion exercise, which they claim has opaque and discriminatory criteria.

They have initiated a move to “paralyse” the port in order to send a strong signal to management.

The Port-Louis Maritime and Employees Association has accused CHCL’s management of not adhering to the terms of the collective agreement signed in August.

According to sources, employees have voluntarily decided to boycott overtime hours, impacting productivity during the busy festive season.

They feel that their efforts and dedication are not adequately recognised, and they question the fairness of promotion opportunities within the organisation.

The collective agreement stipulates that seniority must be considered in promotions, but employees allege that management has created another promotion list, fuelling frustration and dissent.

The Port-Louis Maritime and Employees Association has called on the Prime Minister to intervene and facilitate a productive discussion between the CHCL management and the employees.

Despite attempts to reach CHCL’s chairman, Menon Munien, for comment, he has not responded.
