The Mauritius Revenue Authority is preparing to provide financial support to SMEs and export-oriented businesses to help them pay salary compensation to their employees.

The details of the support are still being finalized, but only genuinely struggling companies will qualify for assistance.

Eligible businesses include financially struggling SMEs with a turnover not exceeding Rs 100 million and export-oriented manufacturing companies.

However, some entrepreneurs in the textile sector are concerned about additional formalities and believe the government should prioritize supporting struggling SMEs rather than profitable larger companies.

There are also concerns about whether the support will fully cover the salary increase, as previous promises of financial assistance were only partially fulfilled.

Many SMEs may struggle to absorb this salary increase, which could result in several closures in 2024.
