Private sector wages to be determined every 5 years
In a press conference on Friday afternoon, December 01, the Minister of Labour announced that private sector wages will be determined every five years, similar to the practice in the public sector through the Pay Research Bureau.
Provisions have been made in the Workers Rights Act to empower the National Wage Consultative Council and the National Remuneration Board to determine wages in the private sector based on the position held by an employee.
According to Soodesh Callichurn, starting in March when this reform is implemented, employees with the same job title, regardless of the sector, will receive the same wage.
For example, all drivers, regardless of their industry, will be entitled to the same salary.
