UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy to Investigate Mauritius

Ana Brian Nougrères, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy, will visit Mauritius from November 27 to December 4 to investigate various privacy issues in the country.

During her visit, Nougrères will address concerns related to data protection, Covid-19 health data collection, cross-border data sharing, cybersecurity, surveillance, artificial intelligence, freedom of expression, gender, and privacy, as well as challenges faced by children in the digital age.

She plans to meet with government officials, civil society, academics, and business representatives, among others, and will present preliminary observations at a press conference on December 4 before submitting a detailed report to the United Nations.

Nougrères’ role is to safeguard privacy by evaluating national policies and laws on data interception and collection, identifying infringements on privacy rights, assisting governments in establishing best practices for lawful surveillance, outlining private sector responsibilities regarding human rights, and ensuring national laws align with international human rights obligations.
