Mauritius to Become “Spider Island” for International Horror Comedy

Mauritius, known for its pristine beauty, will be the backdrop for the unique concept horror comedy, “Spider Island,” helmed by acclaimed writer-director Christopher Smith.

Penned by Christopher Jolley and David Quantick, the story revolves around social media influencers attending the grand opening of a luxurious resort, only to discover it’s overrun by lethal spiders.

Smith, recognised for his work in the horror genre, including award-winning films like “Detour” and “Black Death,” along with the HBO series “Spy/Master,” will be at the directorial helm.

The UK-based Vertigo Films, behind hits like “Monsters” and “Britannia,” will produce the project. Protagonist Pictures will handle global distribution, with sales set to kick off at the upcoming American Film Market.

Automatik VFX, known for its work on “Game of Thrones” and “Doctor Who,” will oversee visual effects, led by Seb Barker from “The Wheel of Time.”

Filming is slated to commence in early 2024 against the scenic backdrop of Mauritius, featuring an international ensemble cast. Smith expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The script for ‘Spider Island’ checks all the boxes, and I can’t wait to bring the audiences on that rollercoaster with me.”

Allan Niblo, co-founder of Vertigo Films, anticipates a cinematic treat, stating, “We are thrilled to be working with Chris and serving up equal measures of scares and laughs all set on a magically exotic island. It will be a cinematic feast for all the senses.”
