Curepipe Town Hall Faces Safety Violations Despite Renovation

The Curepipe Town Hall, which underwent a major renovation costing Rs148 million and spanning over five years, now faces safety violations.

Magistrate Meenakshi Gayan Jaulimsing found the municipality guilty of neglecting worker safety by not providing adequate protection from the elements, failing to maintain a waterproof roof, and allowing moisture buildup.

The incident dates back to September 2020, when a health and safety officer discovered workshops with deteriorated roofs and potential hazards.

Despite corrective actions, the municipality reportedly did not effectively address the roof issues. The magistrate concluded that the municipality violated workplace safety standards.

The Town Hall had reopened in April after extensive renovation, following budget allocation in 2017.

The project contract was awarded to RBRB Construction Ltd.
