Mauritius has lost around Rs 63.1 million because 29,280 tons of sugarcane could not be transported to factories during the 2022 harvest.

According to l’Express, out of this, 28,200 tons of sugarcane were left in fields, equating to 1,974 tons of lost sugar production.

Additionally, 1,080 tons of cut sugarcane could not reach factories on time, which could have generated 75.6 tons of sugar.

These uncoupled yields mean a loss of potential revenue, amounting to over 2,049 tons of sugar.

According to Salil Roy, President of the Planters’ Reform Association, labour scarcity and issues related to timely transportation are highlighted as the main reasons for this revenue setback.
