Mauritius trade deficit drops by 9% in January

Mauritius’ trade deficit dropped to Rs 11.5 billion in January 2023, lower by 39.9% compared to the previous month and by 9.0% compared to the corresponding month of 2022. 

In January 2023, total imports decreased by 34.5% compared to December 2022 and by 1.3% compared to January 2022.

In January 2023, total exports decreased by 23.9% compared to December 2022 and increased by 13.4% compared to January 2022. 

In January 2023, United Kingdom (11.6%), South Africa (11.3%), France (9.0%), Spain (8.1%), Madagascar (7.7%) and United States (7.5%) were the island’s major exports destinations while our imports were mainly from U.A.E. (20.4%), China (14.3%), South Africa (7.2%), France (6.6%), India (6.4%) and United States (3.1%).
