Suspect arrested 17 years after high profile bank heist

A woman of Quatre-Bornes has been arrested seventeen years after a robbery during which MCB’s Customer Care Supervisor Gérald Lagesse was killed.

The woman, aged 47, is suspected of having pocketed nearly Rs 300,000 from the robbery.

During the heist, some Rs 51.8 million had been stolen at MCB’s Headquarters in Port-Louis. The body of Gérald Lagesse was found a day later near the coffers by an attendant.

The victim had been tied and gagged.

Five individuals have been convicted in the case: Daniel Steeve Monvoisin and Laval Sambacaille were sentenced to 16 years prison while Jiawed Ruhumatally was sentenced to 42 years prison.

Mithil Sotrooghan and Vinessen Subbaroyan were both sentenced to two years prison.

The latter was accused of having left the door leading to the vault open for his partners.

Seventeen years later, police suspect that she received the sum of Rs 300,000 from the loot.

Only Rs 3 million of the Rs 51,800,000 had been found under a bridge in Ebene. The rest of the money was never found.

After her interrogation, the suspect was taken to Port-Louis Court, where police objected to her release.
