It's still here, Covid cases are on the rise again

Mauritius’ health ministry reported 439 new coronavirus infections for the past week, the highest in nearly a month, 70% higher than the number it had recorded last week, 268.

Hospitalisations at the New ENT Hospital grew 150%, from 11 to 28. Over the period 23 to 29 June 2022, two deaths were attributed to COVID-19.

The rising number of cases coincides with the lifting of most COVID-19 restrictions effective July 1, 2022.

Announcing the decision earlier this week, PM Pravind Jugnauth had praised the way in which this government tackled the pandemic.

Some health professionals have warned that the uptick suggests a new wave of infections is coming.

They described the recent spike as “inevitable” as regular social interactions resume and vaccine immunity wanes over time.
