New rules set on satellite phones

Those owning and wishing to use a satellite phone will henceforth need to apply and obtain a licence from the Information and Communication Technologies Authority prior to making use of such devices.

According to Cabinet papers, Information and Communication Technologies (Licensing and Fees) Regulations 2022 will be amended to also provide for a new RA16A licence for the use of satellite phones with limited scope.

New initial and annual licence fees for the RA16A licence will be reduced from Rs50,000 to Rs10,000.
