Payment at petrol stations: bank cards out, my.T money in

Petrol retailers have found a way to circumvent payments by bank cards. They have just teamed up with Mauritius Telecom and will now accept payment through MT’s my.T mobile application and the my.T money card.

Announcing the agreement with the Petrol Retailers Association, MT said it will not charge commissions on the transactions.

This development comes after fuel stations announced that they would no longer accept payments by credit or debit card, due to “exaggerated commissions” paid to banks.

Else, they had warned, they would have to pass on additional charges to consumers.

According to media reports, a team at Mauritius Telecom is currently working to extend the my.t money service to all fuel stations around the island.

Cash remains, obviously, the preferred mode of payment.
