A South African national is being quizzed by the Anti Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) after some 660 grams of methamphetamine, estimated to be worth Rs 9 million were seized on Thursday, 3 March.

The drugs were reportedly concealed in two enveloppes sent by post from South Africa.

On discovering the drugs, the Customs and Anti Narcotics Squad reportedly referred the matter to the ADSU.

The recipient of the drugs, a South African national, had reportedly landed in Mauritius on the eve, Wednesday 2 March.

Methamphetamine – meth for short – is a very addictive stimulant drug. It is a powder that can be made into a pill or a shiny rock (called a crystal). The powder is eaten or snorted up the nose. It is also mixed with liquid and injected with a needle. Crystal meth is smoked in a small glass pipe.

Meth at first causes a rush of good feelings, but then users feel edgy, overly excited, angry, or afraid. It causes medical problems including:

  • Making your body temperature so high that you pass out
  • Severe itching
  • ‘Meth mouth’ – broken teeth and dry mouth
  • Thinking and emotional problems
