Met Office warns of thunderstorms and heavy rain for 5 days

Mauritius will be hit by heavy rain and thunderstorms as from this Saturday 5 March –  and it will last for at least 5 days, the Mauritius Meteorological Services have warned.

In a Special Weather Bulletin issued on Friday 4 March, the Met Office revealed the existence of a “complex cyclonic circulation” in our region.

“A vast area of low pressure is situated to the east of Madagascar with a centre that could be located at more than 400 km to the north-north-west of Mauritius this morning. Another shallow low is located off the north-west of Reunion Island. This complex cyclonic circulation will maintain an influx of moisture over our region,” it said.

The shallow low off Reunion Island is expected to fill up by tonight.

However, regarding the other low pressure system, the Met Office cited Numerical Weather Models as suggesting that it will wobble to the north of the Mascarenes for the next 48 hours without much change in intensity.

“But, beyond 2 days, models are not consistent as to the further development and movement of this low-pressure area,” the Met Office said.

One model is said to indicate that the centre will continue to wobble around the same location for the next five day with little change in intensity.

“Whereas another model intensifies the system into a tropical depression and eventually into a moderate tropical storm at the beginning of next week while moving the centre southward towards Mauritius and Reunion Island,” it said.

However, it added, all models maintain a wet weekend with heavy precipitation at times.

“Depending on the evolution of the low pressure, the heavy rains are likely to persist at least until Wednesday. The showers will be accompanied by violent thunderstorms.”
