Get Ready for Voters’ Registration from May 16th to 30th
As the upcoming elections, both partial and general, draw near, the Electoral Commission’s office is gearing up for the registration of voters whose names are not listed on the electoral roll.
Mauritians aged 18 and above are invited to log onto the commission’s website to verify their status. If they do not figure on the list, they are requested to visit the centers in their locality for registration between May 16th and 30th.
To avoid any inconvenience on election day and to ensure that every citizen can exercise their civic duty in peace, each Mauritian is encouraged to check if they are registered on the electoral roll and register if not.
The registration process commences on Thursday, May 16th, and will continue until May 30th.
The voting centers in Mauritius’s 20 districts will be open from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm on weekdays and from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturdays.
Those in Rodrigues, the 21st district, will be open from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm on weekdays and from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturdays.
The three centers in Rodrigues are the Sub Office of the Electoral Commissioner at Port-Mathurin, JMS Grand La Fouche Corail Government School in La Fouche, and Grande Montagne College in Grande-Montagne.
In Mauritius, a total of 51 sites will be set up for voter registration and potential voting centers.
The Electoral Commission’s office will also be open for registration for voters from districts Port-Louis Sud/Port-Louis Central (No 2), Port-Louis Maritime/Port-Louis Est (No 3), and Port-Louis Nord/Montagne-Longue (No 4).
All districts have at least two registration centers set up in primary and secondary schools, community centers, village halls, social welfare centers, or women’s empowerment centers. District No 4 has the largest number of registration centers, with five.
In addition to the Electoral Commission’s office, voters can register at Nicolay GS in Rue Cocoterie, Roche-Bois; Port-Louis North SSS in Bait-ul-Noor Road, Cité La Cure; Mohabeer Foogooa GS in Montagne-Longue; and Terre-Rouge Multipurpose Complex in Terre-Rouge.
Voters are advised to check their status first by sending an SMS to 789. If they do not figure on the list, they should consult the list of registration centers before making their way there. The list is available on the Electoral Commission’s website (oec.govmu.org).
To register, voters must bring their national identity cards and proof of address. For more information, call the Helpline at 800-2010 or visit the website (https://electoral.govmu.org). Voters can also consult the Electoral Commission’s Facebook page.
For those who may have missed it, a Writ of Election was issued by the presidency on May 12th for district No 10, Montagne-Blanche/Grande-Rivière-Sud-Est.
Nomination Day is scheduled for July 11th, with election day set for no later than October 9th. Unless the Prime Minister decides otherwise and chooses to dissolve Parliament, leading to a direct transition to general elections.
