Air Mauritius has announced plans to start direct flights between Rome and Mauritius from October 2024 to April 2025. The airline will operate two weekly flights on Wednesdays and Sundays, deploying its Airbus A330-900neo aircraft with seating configurations of 28 in Business Class and 260 in Economy Class. The initiative is consistent with the airline’s strategy to expand its European network.

Air Mauritius shifted its London operations from Heathrow to Gatwick Airport in March 2020 and began operating daily flights to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport using the A330-900neo and A350-900 models from October 2023.

The carrier aims to offer its passengers connectivity options to popular destinations in Europe. The initial phase of the Rome operations will span from 16-26 October 2024, after which, from 27 October 2024 to 29 March 2025, the frequency and schedule will remain consistent.

The introduction of non-stop flights between Mauritius and Rome will benefit Mauritians travelling on pilgrimage, and the local tourism industry will attract more Italian visitors and visitors from neighbouring countries.

The route will also cater to connecting passengers from the region. Currently, Neos is the only operator offering non-stop flights between Rome Fiumicino and Mauritius.

Last November, Air Mauritius marked its 50th year of operating to London. The airline projected a four percent increase in the number of passengers travelling from London to Mauritius in 2022, with 290,000 passengers.

Laurent Recoura, Officer in Charge of Air Mauritius, referred to the new flights as part of the airline’s consolidation of its European network, adding that Rome had “a lot to offer”.

Return flights from Rome will depart at 19:25 local time, arriving in Mauritius at 08:05 local time the following day.
