Thieves have been caught stealing sandalwood near the Château de la Présidence in Réduit. Despite a strong police presence in the area, the thieves realised the value of sandalwood and were willing to risk arrest to acquire it.

Officers from the Special Mobile Force (SMF) were patrolling the castle grounds and caught three thieves mid-act. The suspects attempted to flee when caught, leaving behind a bag containing tools and a cell phone.

A Judge’s Order will be sought to examine the cell phone data to identify the thieves. The police have started a full investigation to track down the gang involved in the theft. The Scene Of Crime investigators succeeded in collecting fingerprints from the recovered objects.

This is not the first attempted theft of sandalwood in the area. Sandalwood theft is reported to be a growing problem throughout the country. In another recent case, two intruders were arrested while stealing sandalwood roots from a private property in Gros-Cailloux.

Investigations are ongoing to deal with this criminal activity. The police have promised to work tirelessly to put an end to sandalwood theft and bring those responsible to justice. These thieves have attempted these thefts despite the increased police presence and highlight how valuable sandalwood is.

The police are urging anyone who has information on sandalwood theft to come forward with details. The attempted theft of trees highlights the need for greater security measures to curb this growing crime. Sandalwood continues to be a target for thieves due to its high value and increasing demand.
