Mauritian Maestro: Girish’s 2011 Craving Creates 31,000 Fans in Australia
Girish Ramjuttun, the ambassador of Mauritian cuisine in Australia, embarked on his entrepreneurial journey in 2011 when a craving for Mauritian briani led him to create Lakaz Mama.
Originally from Mauritius, Girish left for Melbourne at 19 for higher education, and at 41, he has successfully built a gastronomic bridge between Mauritius and Australia.
Teaming up with Simla, his wife, they founded Lakaz Mama to promote Mauritian culture through the import and distribution of Mauritian food products.
In 2016, they expanded by opening the Lakaz Mama café, offering fusion dishes like “Dholl Puri Burrito” and fish “vindaye” tacos.
Facing challenges in introducing Mauritian cuisine to a foreign audience, they positioned it as one of the great Creole cuisines of the world. Lakaz Mama also organizes events to celebrate Mauritian culture, including an annual Independence Day celebration that drew 31,000 people in 2019.
Beyond importing and managing a café, they launched a manufacturing unit in Mauritius in 2019. Despite business success, Girish’s dream extends beyond, aiming to introduce Mauritian cuisine globally.
Married since 2007, Girish and Simla are proud parents of three daughters, deeply connected to their Mauritian identity and culture.
The family’s commitment to Mauritius is evident in their daily lives and social media presence, where they actively share the richness of Mauritian culture.
Girish envisions returning to the island with his family, fueled by his passion for his home country and the desire to showcase its cultural richness on a global scale.
