Don’t make 14th month bonus a general rule, says Consumer Association
Jayen Chellum, Secretary General of ACIM, has acknowledged the low turnout in ACIM’s protest rallies, citing fear and apathy in a consumer-driven society as reasons for this.
Many workers prioritise overtime work to make ends meet over attending demonstrations.
He criticised the government’s lack of political will to protect consumers and hopes that as the general elections approach, more people will speak out against the perceived allowance of price manipulation by traders.
Chellum expressed disappointment that the Household Budget Survey, which could unveil declining purchasing power, has been delayed until 2024.
Regarding the 14th month payment proposal, Chellum said that companies with significant profits can offer it to their employees, but he cautioned against making it a general rule to avoid harming smaller businesses.
He suggested that the government has enough funds from taxes and budget allocations to support various projects.
