The approval of leisure boat permits in Mauritius has stirred controversy as individuals with close government ties seek to enter the industry.

Irvin Collendavelloo, the son of MP Ivan Collendavelloo, has reportedly received approval from the Tourism Authority to diversify into the pleasure boat sector.

The reopening of permit applications in 2023 has raised concerns, as it had been frozen in 2016 due to sector saturation.

Media reports earlier revealed that a company owned by the new Minister of Agro-Industry, Vikram Hurdoyal, is set to obtain three permits, drawing criticism from established players who feel disadvantaged.

Minister Hurdoyal’s office has stated that he is no longer involved in the company’s decision-making processes.
