Allegations of Bribery: "Dhaliah is Just a Scapegoat," claims Bodha

Nando Bodha, leader of the Rassemblement Mauricien party, asserted that MSM MP Rajanah Dhaliah is being used as a scapegoat in an alleged bribery case related to the lease of land in Grand-Bassin.

Bodha pointed out that the primary figure in the lease grant issue is Attorney General Maneesh Gobin, not Dhaliah. He called for Minister Maneesh Gobin’s resignation.

Rama Valayden of ‘Linion Pep Morisien’ also demanded Gobin’s arrest and resignation, stating his intention to write to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) for clarification.

A similar call came from the Labour Party. Dhaliah had been arrested by the ICAC under a provisional charge of influence peddling. He subsequently resigned as PPS.

However, Rajen Narsinghen, a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Mauritius, has raised concerns about a constitutional loophole in Mauritius.

According to the Constitution, a Member of Parliament (MP) loses their seat if sentenced to more than 12 months in prison.

However, in the case of Rajanah Dhaliah, there has been no conviction, only a provisional charge. Narsinghen argues that the Constitution should be amended to require MPs facing serious charges to step down from Parliament to prevent potential obstruction of legal proceedings.
