Former PPS (Private Parliamentary Secretary) Rajanah Dhaliah appeared before the Independent Commission against Corruption (Icac) this Wednesday August 30, 2023, despite attempting legal avenues to avoid it. He was set to be questioned “under warning” – meaning he could be arrested anytime.

The investigation focusses on allegations of corruption involving a bribe of Rs 3.5 million linked to the allocation of a 250.76-hectare land lease in Grand-Bassin to the Eco Deer Park Association. Dhaliah, a member of the MSM ruling party, resigned from his position as PPS on August 28. The ICAC’s inquiry was triggered by revelations from Keegan Etwaroo, the former leaseholder, who claimed that a cash transaction, forming a significant part of the Rs 3.2 million, took place in Dhaliah’s office. The investigation also implicates Rajesh Ramnarain, the former president of the Sugar Investment Trust, for facilitating the transfer of the contentious amount.
