Qualification controversy: Another Political Appointee in Mauritius Forced to Resign

The Chairman and Director General of the Mauritius Meat Authority (MMA), Zaid Heera, has reportedly stepped down due to questions surrounding his academic qualifications.

According to Defi Media, an ongoing audit on the academic credentials of political nominees revealed discrepancies, allegedly prompting Heera’s resignation.

The audit was initiated after Presley Paul resigned as the CEO of the Cargo Handling Corporation Ltd (CHCL) in June 2023 when it was discovered he did not possess the required qualifications.

He had initially been appointed Chairman by the Cabinet in September 2018 and later assumed the role of Director-General earlier this year.

Heera cited personal reasons for his resignation and stated he will transition out of his role upon his return from England in August.

The Mauritius Meat Authority (MMA) is a state-owned body established under the provision of the Meat Act of 1974. Its main functions are, among others, to: provide slaughtering services and ensure regular supply of fresh meat on the market; establish and manage abattoirs; purchase and import livestock; market meat, meat products and by-products of the slaughtering process; and control and regulate the sale of meat and meat products.
