Former CHCL CEO Arrested over Fake Documents

Former CEO of Cargo Handling Corporation Ltd (CHCL), Presley Paul, was arrested on June 27, by investigators from the Central Criminal Investigation Department (CCID).

Police were investigating fake documents that he allegedly submitted to the CHCL Board of directors in order to secure the position of CEO.

He appeared in court on the same day and was released. The truth came to light following the Leader of the Opposition’s Private Notice Question on June 6, regarding the port’s performance.

Xavier-Luc Duval had requested a copy of Paul’s qualifications from Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth.

A few days later, Presley Paul was compelled to resign, and in a statement to Parliament on June 20, Jugnauth confirmed that Paul did not possess the qualifications for the CEO position.

Meanwhile, the Port-Louis Maritime Employees Association (PLMEA) has issued a firm ultimatum to the management of CHCL, demanding that the collective agreement be implemented no later than the end of July.

Failure to comply will result in potential union actions, PLMEA spokesperson Gerard Bertrand has warned.

During their General Assembly held on Tuesday, June 27, in Cassis, employees advocated for improved working conditions, including a salary revision. In April, the CHCL’s management proposed a 15% wage increase during negotiations with the PLMEA, a proposition that was accepted by the employees.
