Controversial Remarks Threaten MSM's Minority Allies’ Reunion Project

The project of reuniting minority allies of the MSM ruling party has been seriously jeopardised due to controversial remarks made by Deputy Prime Minister Steven Obeegadoo.

His comment – ‘Galimatia’ (nonsense/mess) has drawn criticism from the Mauritius Tamil Cultural Centre Trust (MTCCT), which is in a dispute with the Ministry of Housing and Lands over a piece of land in Réduit.

The Muvman Liberater (ML), deeply rooted in the Stanley/Rose-Hill constituency with a significant Tamil community, has expressed strong dissatisfaction and decided to suspend discussions for reunification with Obeegadoo’s Platforme Militante.

Furthermore, the ML’s disagreement with certain provisions go the Finance Bill has reportedly heightened tensions and raised speculations about the unity within the ruling coalition.

The MPs from the ML, Ivan Collendavelloo and Zahid Nazurally were reportedly seeking more autonomy for local authorities, but the Finance Minister rejected it.

The ML MPs’ stance was applauded by the opposition, leading to speculation about possible tensions within the government. ML leaders responded that differing opinions are normal, even within the government.

“We are part of the government, but it doesn’t mean we always have to agree with it. In the ML, we are not yes-men,” a member of the party’s leadership was cited as saying.

The government has downplayed the situation, considering it a passing issue in political coalitions.
