MP takes Mauritius PM to Court over election postponement decision

Nando Bodha, leader of the Ralliement Mauricien (RM) along with two other party members, have filed a legal challenge against Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth’s decision to postpone municipal elections.

They lodged an application for a judicial review at the Supreme Court, seeking permission to contest the two-year postponement, until June 13, 2025.

They are requesting the court to expedite the case within three months and order the holding of the elections within 60 days.

They argued that the Prime Minister’s decision is “illegal and undemocratic”.

Upon the presentation of the motion, Chief Justice Bibi Rehana-Mungly-Gulbul declined to address the request immediately and ordered Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, who is cited as the defendant in this case, to appear before her on June 26, 2023.

This date has been set for the hearing of the case.

On June 12, Linion Pep Morisien (LPM) has filed a complaint for the same reason in the Supreme Court against the State, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Local Government, and the Attorney General.
