Port Louis will become 'uninhabitable' in the coming years

Mauritius’ coastal areas are in danger of becoming uninhabitable and relocation planning has to start soon, according to Vassen Kauppaymuthoo, an environmental engineer and oceanographer.

In an interview with Defi Media, he recalled that a good chunk of Port Louis has been built on filled sea at a fairly low level.

“With climate change, Port-Louis will become a ghost town, where there will not be much activity. If we have a torrential rainfall, the city could be under water,” he claimed.

“It is a very vulnerable area in terms of climate change, in terms of flooding and the mountains nearby and the fact that there are a lot of buildings blocking the drains. There are many modifications that have been made that prevent rainwater from draining naturally. This needs to be restored,” he added.

Kauppaymuthoo also urged authorities to consider reviewing land-use planning as some coastal areas could become uninhabitable. “We have to think about relocating people in the next 10 to 20 years, with coastal erosion and sea level rise, and with natural disasters becoming more frequent.”

“Climate change must be the basis of all economic, social and environmental thinking.”
