Businessman fails to pay VAT and Income Tax, fined Rs7.7 million

A Mauritian businessman has been fined a total amount of Rs 7.7 million by the Intermediate Cour after being found guilty on 24 charges of failing to pay Value Added Tax and 5 other charges of failing to pay income tax.

The accused was prosecuted as a representative of A.A.S Electrical House Ltd.

The Court noted that the accused pleaded guilty even though it came “very late”, seven years after the case was first heard by the intermediate court.

In court, Sanyal Mehra Soodhoo apologized and explained the circumstances under which he committed the offences. He had a clean record.

The magistrate said she also took into account the observations of the lawyers of both parties, including the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) – that a prison sentence would not be appropriate in the circumstances.
