Likely disruption in supply of cattle and goat from South Africa
Beef lovers may temporarily need to turn to alternative meat soon. Mauritius has reportedly gone on high alert as the foot-and-mouth disease continues to wreck havoc in South Africa.
Local authorities said they fear a significant disruption in the sale of beef in the coming weeks as South Africa is one of the main suppliers of beef and goat.
All cattle imports from Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Free State, North West and Pumalanga have been suspended.
Discussions are reportedly underway with other countries, including Namibia, Botswana and Tanzania. But before finalizing any deal, health tests will be carried out.
