Catholic Church urges 'party in power' to work for the welfare of the people

Catholic Church’s Cardinal Maurice Piat has subtly hit at the Mauritian Government for failing to take care of the poorer section of the community.

“A country that ignores part of the population will not be able to live in peace,” Defi Media cited Cardinal Piat as saying during the May Day mass.

“The population is anxious, discouraged, and even angry by such brutal increases. These increases could be long-term,” he said, referring to recent and upcoming protests.

“I do not approve violence. But if we want to cure these people, we need to find out the reasons behind these protests and cries of the people… Despite all these suffering, we need to encourage sharing so that every person can keep his dignity.”

Speaking about the political leadership, Cardinal Piat added: “A party that comes to power is not here to take care of its own welfare, but that of the people.”
