Panic in Rodrigues: Island records first 64 COVID cases in one day

The health situation is said to be rapidly deteriorating in Rodrigues since a 38-year-old woman was tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday. Ten hours later, 63 other cases had been recorded, Le Mauricien reported.

The situation is said to be highly unpredictable since the woman had not travelled recently travelled outside Rodrigues.

And only a few cases were detected among travellers from Mauritius during quarantine, but never in the community before.

The newspaper said local authorities intend to force 115 police officers – sent to Rodrigues for the upcoming regional elections – to do PCR tests as soon as possible.

Contact Tracing exercises are currently underway, while all religious and political gatherings have been suspended.

L’Express reported that the 64 people are currently admitted at the Mont-Lubin health centre.

Rodrigues is currently in the middle of the regional elections campaign.
