AFD Allocates 1.3 Million Euros to Explore Groundwater in Rodrigues

The French Development Agency (AFD) will provide a financial subsidy of 1.3 million euros to investigate the potential existence of groundwater in Rodrigues.

A delegation from the AFD will visit the island next Saturday to discuss the details of the study with the Regional Assembly of Rodrigues.

The study aims to develop and strengthen the water sector on the island. Meanwhile, Rodrigues plans to build a new reservoir to store desalinated water due to recent breakdowns in the island’s desalination plants.

Groundwater, if present, would be a valuable source of drinking water for the inhabitants, as it requires less treatment and is less susceptible to pollution compared to surface water.

If the research confirms the presence of groundwater, capturing methods such as wells, boreholes, or springs will be employed.

This large-scale capturing operation would be a first for the island.
