Re-registration of SIM cards: Experts call for independent audit

Experts are urging for an independent audit to be conducted on the storage of personal data, including selfies, as part of the re-registration process for SIM cards.

They are questioning the necessity of submitting selfies and raising concerns about the protection of sensitive information.

Mauritius Telecom’s CEO has reassured the public that data is encrypted and inaccessible, with security measures in place.

However, critics argue that the online registration process may exclude those without internet access and raise issues regarding the protection of personal data.

The re-registration campaign, initiated on October 31, 2023, aims to combat drug trafficking by ensuring that SIM cards are registered under the correct owner’s name.

Failure to re-register by April 30, 2024, will result in automatic deactivation.
