Political observers have been speculating that Ivan Collendavelloo, leader of the ML party, may soon be returning to the Cabinet of Ministers following his recent summons to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) in relation to the Saint-Louis scandal.

However, former minister and political observer Jean Claude de l’Estrac has warned that if Collendavelloo is cleared in the Saint-Louis case, it may lead to allegations that the ICAC is being manipulated by the state.

“It would be absolute proof that the State is manipulating the ICAC and it would be another discredit to the institution,” he continued.

Meanwhile, journalist and editor Subash Gobine said that Collendavelloo has the potential to play a significant role in upcoming elections, particularly in urban areas.

“The MSM needs to ensure that the opposition does not win all the seats in urban areas.

The MSM may face difficulties with ‘caste’, communal and ‘vote-cutting’ issues in rural areas,” he said, adding that Collendavelloo may be seen as an asset to the party in securing these votes.
