Citizens protest against privatisation of 25 Arpents at Anse-La-Raie Beach

Over a hundred individuals, primarily from Anse-La-Raie, gathered during the week-end to protest against the allocation of prime state lands of the coastal village to private interests.

The #PasKokinAnseLaRaie (Don’t Steal Anse-La-Raie) movement organised the rally, with posters emphasising that “Our beaches, our Youth Centre, our heritage are threatened.”

Attendees expressed outrage at plans to demolish the Youth Centre that was integral for young people to spend group vacations. Even Labour MP Osman Mahomed attended the gathering.

What particularly angers them is that the beneficiary of the 25 arpents was not open to a transparent process, instead favouring Luxury Suites Ltd, said to be owned by Avinash Gopee, a crony of the MSM ruling party.

Speculation arises that the Rs200million realignment of the Mont-Choisy to Cap-Malheureux road had a hidden agenda of development.

The group announced that protests, marches, and press conferences would be organised soon to combat the government’s decision.
