Less than 10% of candidates passed the Council for Vocational Legal Education (CVLE) bar exams in Mauritius, including those for lawyers, notaries, and solicitors.

The disappointing results showed that out of 218 candidates, only 20 passed. This article sheds light on the situation and analyses the shortcomings of the legal education system.

According to Selva Murday, solicitor, the low passing rate reflects the high level of standards required to become an attorney in Mauritius.

On the other hand, Priscilla Balgobin-Bhoyrul, President of the Bar Council, argued that the majority of students struggle with language skills. Rajen Narsinghen, senior lecturer in law at the University of Mauritius, suggested that the root of the problem lies in the system itself, pointing to a lack of practical testing and inadequate teaching resources.

While the debate continues, the bar exam results present a significant challenge for aspiring legal professionals in Mauritius.
