From January 2008 until April 13 of this year, suspended police officers under investigation for suspected unlawful activities have incurred a cost of over Rs 191 million.

Regardless of their suspension status, they continued to receive their salaries until the conclusion of the investigations and the outcome of any court proceedings.

In April of this year, as disclosed by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth in a document presented to Parliament, a total of 156 police officers were suspended.

This information was provided in response to an earlier query raised by MMM Member of Parliament, Aadil Ameer Meea, on April 18.

A breakdown of the figures reveals that the amount more than doubled in 2021, reaching Rs 43.5 million. This spike underscores the high number of police suspensions during that period.

In the past year alone, Rs 43.1 million were allocated to remunerate suspended police officers who have yet to face judgment for the charges against them.
