Bel-Ombre Village in Mauritius has achieved a notable distinction by being listed among the top 100 Green Destinations, signifying its commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental conservation.

The Tourism Authority played a pivotal role in securing this recognition, making Bel-Ombre Village the first Green Destinations-certified destination in Mauritius.

The announcement was made during the Green Destinations Conference 2023 in Estonia.

The village’s journey towards this achievement began with consultations with stakeholders and the submission of an entry report, showcasing a success rate of over 60%, highlighting its dedication to sustainable practices and responsible tourism.

Lindsay Morvan, Director of the Tourism Authority, elaborated on the criteria for the recognition and Mauritius’ broader efforts to become a sustainable tourism destination.

Discussions are also underway for Rodrigues to be included in the top 100 sustainable destinations worldwide.

Additionally, a zero-waste project is in negotiation with the Tui Foundation to promote environmental awareness and conservation efforts, including initiatives like beach recycling bins and ecosystem protection.

The Green Destinations Top 100 Stories competition is an annual event supported by various prominent organizations, recognising destinations committed to sustainable practices.
