During the 2020 lockdown, the Central Electricity Board (CEB) allegedly overpaid for 61,000 masks, leading to an ongoing investigation by the Independent Commission against Corruption (ICAC). Documents show that the CEB was charged up to Rs 200 per mask by two suppliers.

Despite an earlier announcement by the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) reducing VAT on protective masks to 0%, the CEB was still charged 15% VAT.

The CEB initially sought the Ministry of Commerce’s intervention, but when no action was taken, they filed a complaint with the ICAC.

While no arrests have been made, suppliers reportedly refunded the 15% VAT.
