Mauritius Ranks Fifth in Highest Minimum Wages on the Continent

Mauritius holds the fifth position for the highest minimum wage on the African continent. A significant number of African countries do not have a concept of minimum wage within their legislation.

Among those that do, Seychelles, with a population of 96,387 as of the 2021 census, takes the lead. The minimum wage there stands at US$ 426, approximately Rs 19,552. However, the average salary is notably higher, at Rs 32,927. Seychelles boasts the highest per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Africa. Morocco follows in second place, with an average wage equivalent to Rs 16,523. Libya secures the third spot, with a minimum wage equivalent to Rs 14,916 per month. Gabon ranks fourth with a minimum wage of Rs 11,703. Mauritius closely follows Gabon, where the current minimum wage is Rs 11,575. However, in Mauritius, the guaranteed minimum income was raised to Rs 15,000 as of July 01. South Africa took the sixth position with a minimum wage of Rs 11,107.
