Therapeutic Cannabis: Soon to Become a Reality

Therapeutic cannabis is on the brink of being introduced to eligible patients in Mauritius. 

The Ministry of Health has confirmed the imminent arrival of the first batch of medicinal cannabis products.

Dr. Anil Jhugroo, a psychiatrist from the Ministry of Health, was cited as revealing that the necessary import procedures have been completed.

Patients referred by their doctors will be assessed by the Medicinal Cannabis Therapeutic Committee to ascertain their suitability for this treatment, particularly those with conditions like cancer, multiple sclerosis, and epilepsy.

Initially, the “balanced THC & CBD” product, aimed at addressing spasticity symptoms, will be provided. CBD Oil is also anticipated to follow.

The distribution of these products will be handled by the Victoria Hospital’s pharmacy for public service patients, while those in the private sector can purchase the medication through the Ministry of Health’s finance office.

This development marks a significant step forward in bringing therapeutic cannabis to those in need within the medical community of Mauritius.
